Tanu Weds Manu Returns

Tanu Weds Manu Returns: a brilliantly hilarious movie with the worst male character ever scripted. If the 'menninist' wing was as active as the 'feminist' wing, this movie would have been banned. Personally I rate this movie a hilarious 8/10, but at the same time I'm very clear about its shattering drawbacks hidden beneath its brilliant dialogues, comic timing and kangana's incredible performance. Also what saves the movie is that it presents a strong front for women and addresses issues that india seriously needed to have answered on the mass media platform - aka the social status of women, female athletes and the caste circus. Beneath all these plusses is hidden one of the most spineless, purposeless male characters ever scripted - manu. A man who is as cliche and spineless as ever. A man who would be the villian if not shrouded in the garb of being the 'male protagonist'. A man who runs around getting married, breaking hearts and doing it all in the garb of being an a grade loser who keeps his commitments. The over the top moments of the film are forgivable if you look at it as a slapstick comedy and not as a serious movie. The lack of attention to detail like never establishing what sport the female leas plays, or why is the counselling session in an asylum is forgivable as per a slapstick humour movie. Dont get me wrong, I love the movie and I love kangana enough to have watched this movie twice and enjoyed it too. But please, next time, pls try and fix these faults. Let's not override the feminism wave and turn Bollywood's final hope for maturity into a new shithole of senselessness. Cheers! PS: I delayed this review because I'm often biased towards kanagana as she is my fav actress in Bollywood. And I didn't want to put out a review that would be percieved as biased. #bollywood #men #script #review #movie #film #comedy

QUEEN: The Pushkaraj S Shirke Review

view full image

Queen: The Pushkaraj S Shirke Review My loathing for all things bollywood is pretty well known. So when I praise a movie that comes from the garbagepile of cinema that we call Bollywood, it's truly remarkable. One such movie in a Long long time, is QUEEN.

Genuinely simple and Hilarious, woman centric, realistic with subtle flights of fantasy and far far away from the stereotypical romantic crap tht infests Bollywood. This movie has it all. I've always adored kangana for being a very sweet person an considered her an actress with genuine potential - and this movie just proved that to everyone who's watched it. The direction and cinematography carry the candid and piece of life feel of the story throughout. Not at one moment do you feel that you are watching a movie. And that's true genius.

The costume and art are as true to character and location as can be throughout the film - and even In the end, where out if my cynical nature, I was expecting It to go out d character and overboard, it did not. And tht just made it perfect. Unlike a typical Bollywood movie where character transformations are always cocoon to splendid Amazonian butterfly, Queen managed to keep it real.

Its a movie you really take home with you even long after you have left the cinema hall. And that's how you know you have witnessed real cinema.

 My rating: 9/10
Must watch. Must own on DVD. Must show your daughter.

Tropic Thunder

IMDB LINK
monkeyrating: 8/10

genre:
Action | Adventure | Comedy

waddabout: a New comer film maker, millions of dollars wasted in budget and a mega trio of superstars plague a jungle action movie. The inept director carries out an plan to shoot the movie reality show style leading to deadly yet hilarious consequences!

i say: Seeing Robert Downey Jr playing a nigger is priceless, his accent and demeanor is laugh out loud funny! This parody of apocalypse now! And platoon type movies is an must see for comedy lovers.

pandarespect to: Tom cruise for playing the hot headed producer Les Grossman, he is gross, ugly and vulgar. Not to mention hilarious. The movie opening is sheer brilliance with fake ads revealing the characters to us without being totally obvious. Special mention for the dialogs such as “you never go full retard”. This movie is a must watch for spoof fans, as an action film it can stand on its own with some funny yet bombastic action sequences.

trivia note: the movie is based on an idea ben stiller had when his fellow actors and friends were going off to fake boot camps to get the sense of being a soldier. Stiller found it to be ridiculous because a fake boot camp won’t even be close to a real war!

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

IMDB Link
monkeyrating: 8/10

genre:
Action | Adventure | Comedy

waddabout: The groovy 60’s spy Austin Powers, whose enemies fear him, women love him and rivals want to be him, is frozen cryogenically and woken up in the 1990’s. He is on the trail of the evil Dr….umm Evil. (An obvious spoof of the 70’s James bond movies, Dr Evil is a caricature of the famous Bond villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld.)

i say: You can't afford to miss this one!!!! definitely one of my fav anytime anywhere watch comedy movies ever! as austin would put it: this's movie's got the MOJO bababyy!!!

pandarespect to: Mike Myers for playing both the hero and the villain. His lines as Austin powers is audacious at best, things like “groovy baby... yeah” “Oh Behave!” etc are instantly quotable. His Dr Evil persona is different enough in look and personality to not instantly alert that it’s the same actor playing both parts. Mike's mojolicious charm shines through even with his bad teeth, googfy goggles and his weird hairstyle, this is how it was meant to be and the real brilliance of the movie is apparent. Austin Powers fully functions as a spy flick in its own right plus it spoofs all kinds of movies in a subtle way, its funnier portions are when characters refer to the obvious stupidity of a villain feeding his nemesis and then trying to off him with a silly plan.

Mike Myers can't be thanked enough for popularising awesome words like shagedelic, grrovy, mojo, shagalicious and other swinger slang! you gotta enjoy it everytime you see him yap those words!

trivia note: Vanessa (Liz Hurley) had red tape over her breasts in the famous nude yet hidden by movie props sequence. This was done so that photographers on set couldn’t sell nude pictures of her.
In 2006 this movie was voted one among the 50 top comedies of all time, by Premiere.

watch the trailer: it's GROOOVY babayyy!

Thank You For Smoking

monkeyrating: 8/10
genre: comedy / drama
waddabout: A crisp, stylistic satirical comedy that revolves around the life of Tobacco's chief spokesman, the charismatic and sharp Nick Naylor, who is eventually caught between spinning his 'truths' and being his 12 year old son's role model.
i say: flawless art direction and costumes, amazing editing, a pacy story and a brilliant concept gives you a film you can watch quite a few times. It also gives you an honest perspective of the ethics VS economics nature of the world, especially from the POV of the tobbaco and cigarettes industry. Watch it, with a smoker preferably! ;)
monkeyrespect to: Jason Rietman's direction and screenplay are brilliant! its like a movie made up of sliding pieces that just snap together one after the other.
Snap! Snap! Snap! there's not a single gap or glitch that leaves you waiting or wondering. or making an effort to read into things. Whatevers there, is there ion the platter. Slam!
Equal credits go to Dana Glauberman, without whose editing that very feel would be near impossible.

must watch segment: the opening credits sequence of this movie, on which names appear like cigarette packaging from the early days of cigarettes till the packaging today! innovative shit! love the art and typography - and the Music, on this one!
Check out the credits sequence:

Road Trip

monkeyrating: 6/10
a crazy funny college adventure comedy that makes you want to hit the road with friends rite away! brainless laughs guaranteed!

Waddabout: Four friends drive 1800 miles of an adventure filled road to try and retrieve an erroneously mailed sex tape that's been mailed to the guy's girlfriend! hee ha ha ha ha

Genre: Comedy Adventure

I say: Todd Phillips (Director of THE HANGOVER masterpiece) has made his mark with juvenile, crazy, trippy, mad films. And road trip was almost the beginning of his journey. But the madness is apparent and inescapable. and his choice in music just adds to all the crazy, bizzare, almost typicall GUY fun ;)

Warning: boobies galore. keep kids away :P
