Pushkaraj S Shirke: Old Logo Revived - the fire wolf

"There's something about wolves I can relate to on a very emotional level. Their pride. Their eternal intellect. Their undying attitude. Their survive it all skills. Their mysterious ways. Their balance of wilderness and domestication. Their place in mythology and folklore. So it was not surprising that i chose the legend of the fire wolf - the king of all wolves, as the insignia of the first company i ever started - at age 19. It was a story that always inspired me - the story of the wolf that stole fire from the gods and gave it to all life on earth. The story of the wold that lives even today in spirit in all wilderness, commanding all dogs, wolves and foxes alike. The wolf that is one with the universe itself - materializing in various cannine forms from time to time when balance is needed in the universe. There's an attachment to that icon in my heart even today long after i shut that company. Something about it that i cant let go of. It is still trademarked in my name. So now when I need a visual identity for my ventures again, its the same i find myself turning back to. In design, in has nothing to do with what I do today. Infact it is sketched when i was still in college. But in principle, it has everything that i stand for - the pride i take in my work, the principles i live by and the admiration i have for sheer intellect and integrity. The fact that the wolf is as comfortable in a tight bound pack as it is alone. The fact that the wolf outlives the biggest beasts in the forest. The fact that the wolf has way more spirit than any other beast in folklore. So once again, the Firewolf is reborn. My visual identity. My insigna. My logo. My seal that marks me even if my name isn't present. The legend of the fire wolf lives again."

COMIC BOOK HELMET ART

being a comic book and graphic art fan, i always wanted a comic book helmet - so took out my art box, put my arty side to work and went ahead and made myself one this weekend.

We are raised into being ‘polite', making us forget to keep in touch with the animal that lurks within human nature.

We often don't realize that saying  ‘NO',  ‘creating a scene' or  ‘offending someone' is not always wrong.

And in forgetting these things we often end up taking up responsibilities that aren’t ours to shoulder, taking up the wrong job, marrying the wrong person, putting up with violence and corruption and even falling prey to sexual predators and emotional rapists.

It's time to unblind yourselves.
SEE THE EVIL, 
HEAR THE EVIL
and  SPEAK THE EVIL 
without shame when necessary. 
Or atleast teach your kids and loved ones to...
even if its already too late for you.

Designing a Logo

A friend asked me to deign a logo for his brand: DANCE UNDERGROUND. Its a label that deals with musicians and DJs and underground music events across the country.
So i started off with a few scrawls to get the feel of the intended communication.

SKETCH THE CONCEPT:
Unlike most digital artists, i like to actually hand-draw my concepts and icons onto paper even before i go onto the machine. i use as little technology as possible - coz somehow, i find it adds more character and personality to the things i create. ofcourse there are people who directly kick ass on coreldraw and photoshop alone. but hey, this is me. so off i got to drawing little icons and cues that suggested what the brand needed to communicate and what the brand stood for. after a paper full of these, i picked out the best ones, and singled them out into recognizable logo units.

DESIGN IT:
Once i had created a logo unit using the cues i wanted, i scanned the basic sketch and on came photoshop.
Which brought me to choosing the font. i LOVE hand-drawn fonts, but the kind of cleanness the preset fonts have is kinda irreplaceable. so picked a font i liked. out came the brushes and the layers and poof!
The final 2D logo for DANCE UNDERGROUND was ready:

RENDER IT COMPLETE:
Then came the task of adding dimension and texture to the elements. Since this is a unit that is mostly for the web and visual mediums, a 3D rendered logo made sense. So i got on to that task.
A little steel, a little leather, a little neon and a few sprays and liquids - and we were done.
The final logo of DANCE UNDERGROUND was created:

and that's the way the cookie crumbles. and a logo is designed. from concept - to final design.

The Art-direction Allstars : iconic objects that denote visual character in cinema

When it comes to cinema, the 'visual' medium, every object is a character.
Whether its Don Corleone's Cigar and Whiskey in Godfather, or Bruce willis's gold watch in pulp Fiction, or a Tube TV in Soylent Green, or a Zippo in the n number of action flicks. The 'objects' are a conscious choice cause they add to the character. they tell a story even when the character's face cant be seen or dialogues cant be heard. And within their own space on the screen, they are the silent heroes and villans and lovers and haters of the story.

This is a tribute to some of the best of them.

The mind is like a puzzle. a box of goodies. when classified broadly, its just 2 parts. the left brain that rules the world of logic and reason... and the right brain which is always a chaos of ideas and creativity and imagination. For each person the combination the unique... and depends on how much they prefer, and are capable of using a specific side of the brain. but in an ideal case scenario - its a perfect balance. where the ideas create the reality and the reality inspires the ideas... and endless circle within the box we call the brain.

how would it be if you could see inside my head when i was happy on the inside. what is a happy state of mind?

maybe a soft, crumbling muffin? a gold fish, an old song... a long road into the sunset, a breakfast in bed? a waterfall in the jungle, a strum on the guitar, a few happy notes, cotton candy clouds?

a song for her? happy memories of her, the touch of her hands.... the sound of her name?

a weird snowman, a few happy aliens, lots and lots of rainbows? candy canes and christmas?

or maybe all this and more?

it's just a feeling... a feeling words can't describe. this happy... happy state of mind.

God is a Curious Child #japan

Incidents like the wave of eartquakes and Tsunamis in japan make you ponder if there is a god. and/or if there is, what is he doing? is there a plan behind this? or is this just an accident. this illustration was my version of that pondering....

It reminds me the time when i was a child and my mother got me this gorgeous little battery operated chimpanzee that would do funny little somersaults... and i loved it. it was my favourite toy. and then one day when i was home alone, i just wanted to see if the toy would do similar somersaults even in water, and off it went into a tub full of water. to my dismay, it just drowned. and later i discovered that it would never work again. Iwas heartbroken. i loved that toy... but just out of curiosity, i had ended up destroying it. I wasnt mean or hurtful. Infact, i ended up causing myself much more hurt than could ever be repaired that night.

so maybe... just maybe... even god is just a curious little child ... filling his toy tray with water not knowing exactly what would happen... but stricken with equal sadness at the havoc unleashed.
