My Winners from the 2011 Oscars

BEST ACTOR: COLIN FIRTH
a performance to die for. this actor has really come of age. a gripping performance that delivers the character to you almost in flesh!

BEST ACTRESS: NATALIE PORTMAN
if you've seen the movie, no words are necessary to describe why!

BEST SUPPOSTING ACTOR: CHRISTIAN BALE
a supporting actor who clearly overshadows the lead actor and yet underplays effectively enough to support the lead? and be absolutely believeable at the same time? incredible!

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: i really can't guess this one.

BEST FILM: THE SOCIAL NETWORK
might win: the kings speech
Social Network captured the essence of this decade - and the gambles beneath the waves in a way that it could be EXPERIENCED by everyone. that's what makes it my fav pick for this year.
while The Kings Speech is a good movie nonetheless. it brings an era alive in front of your eyes. but its not as 'defining' of out time as TSN.

BEST DIRECTOR: DAVID FINCHER (the social network)
in my heart i wish: christosopher nolan (inception)
a man who can bring to life in an exiting way the world of boring computer programmers truly deserves all credit for the effort.
meanwhile what CN did is a milestone in cinema. there's no applauding enough. but hey, they might as well be award him for DK2 ;) you never know!

BEST SCREENPLAY: THE KINGS SPEECH
the frames speak the story of many pages in a single scene. the layers exist, but are easy to percieve and smack you in the right proportions of meaningfulness. i couldnt find a more apt screenplay this year atleast.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: THE SOCIAL NETWORK
the skill to convert a boring but interesting book going blah blah blah to a movie that rocks your mind off without changing its essence? damn it better win!

BEST MUSIC SCORE: THE SOCIAL NETWORK
gooosebumps is the word. dolby or not, you FEEL the music drive the emotion of the movie.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: INCEPTION
might win: true grit
were you really able to take your eyes off the screen even for a moment during Inception? i wan't. hence the win.
though TG is a strong contender for all those landscapes and frames that tell the story so well. add to that the fact that the cinematographer of TG is a 9 time nominee with not a single win yet. yay panel sympathy.

BESTSOUND DESIGN/MIXING: INCEPTION
i can still feel the layers of sounds shifting between the three altered dream states. and me floating somewhere between them.

BEST SFX: INCEPTION
watched the movie? are you spinning? i sure as hell am.

BEST COSTUME AND ART DIRECTION: THE KINGS SPEECH
might win: alice in wonderland
flawless is the word. the entire time period shifts when you look into this movie. from the chequered dresses and frills to the tableware in the not so important scenes, all of it is just right in the time warp.
but we can't forget AIWL for tim burton's ever present insistence of awesome art and costumes. it does come alive as a different world. but then there's also the question of being tottally aided by CG vs REAL art and costume direction.

BEST MAKEUP: WOLFMAN
a little over the top, but for once the make-up really is deeper than skin deep. must give it over to this one.

  1. Chris Nolan is the Alfred Hitchcock of our generation. he hasnt won a single oscar, yet his contribution to the awesomeness of cinema is unquestionable.

having said that, i think there should be an OSCAR for "ICONIC CONTRIBUTION TO CINEMA"
    - AVATAR would won it last year, and INCEPTION this year.

it would also promote film producers to invest on BETTER CINEMA and push the envelope for a greater, better cinema development in the near and upcoming future.

Currently, production houses are only chasing commerce over asthetics... and with good reason ofcourse. so let's give them a reason (an oscar, an appreciation, a recognition) to chase otherwise. :) The future of cinema depends on it.
